So welcome to 2019… I know, crazy right? It feels like I’ve blinked at 2018 has just disappeared in to a big sweaty pregnant memory (which is generally how I spent most of the year)
2018 was pretty magical for us, with the arrival of Iver completing our little family of four in September, 2019 has a lot to live up to. I do love a new year, the fresh feeling, the opportunity and the unknown. What will the next 12 months hold?
So I’ve decided to note down a few of my goals for the year, that way after they’re out there, I can hold myself accountable and make sure that I’m staying on track to achieve them. I talked on my Instagram about starting a photography project and I’m hoping that will really take off. The #52weekportraitproject starts in the first week of January. You pick a subject and you shoot them, however, wherever you please, once a week for 52 weeks. By the end of the year, you’ll have a catalogue of beautiful images that will document the growth and change of your chosen muse. I’m using my kids, obviously, and I’ve thought about using myself too… but we’ll see how that one goes.
I’m planning to really push myself and my photography this year, really learn about my camera, the lenses and their capabilities. I do hope you’ll join me on the project and my plan to post about them each week, not just for the gram, but here too. I’d like to discuss which camera settings I used, what lens I chose and how I achieved the ‘look’. So stay tuned for that.
My second goal for 2019 is to read. I tried to achieve one book a month last year, and that was really too much for me, I think I got through four? So this year, I’m challenging myself to read 6. If you have any recommendations for me, hit me up.
Third, and this goal I’ve sort of already started, is to be more present. Too many times I find myself using my phone as a crutch. My excuse? I spend a lot of time on my own. When my husband is away my phone is my door to the outdoor world, it’s my means of communication with my friends, it’s my work, it’s how I stay up to speed with what’s happening in the world. I barely see the news, or anything current events related as my Tv is dictated by a small human and the thought of trying to read a newspaper, just makes me laugh.
So I guess my point is, I’m going to be on my phone less. When I’m with my kids, I’ll endeavour to leave it in the kitchen. When I’ve got company I’ll leave it upstairs. I don’t want to miss what’s going on in the world, but I don’t want to miss what’s happening at home, more.
My fourth goal relates to my wardrobe and my lifestyle. I think I’ve been working on this subconsciously for a while but I’m endeavouring to try a little harder. With regard to clothes, by less and buy better. Buy what I can afford and if it’s something I really want, save for it, don’t settle for a cheaper alternative that wont last. Then there is lifestyle… reduce plastic waste. We’ve already switched to beeswax wraps in place of cellophane and we now get our milk delivered in glass bottles from a local milkman. This is pretty endearing and I love how bloody nostalgic and old fashioned it feels. I mean, I get a paper bill stuff to the condensation on the bottle every month. It’s so twee it hurts.
Fifth, I’d like to raise some awareness and money for mental health, perhaps challenging myself to a 5k, or dare I say it… 10k. I’ve never done anything like that before but this year feels like a year I could tackle it. If you have experience getting involved in this type of thing, I’d love some advice.
