Right, there. I said it, it’s out in the open and we can just get on and talk about it now. October is Big Pink month, Breast Cancer care’s campaign to help raise some money and awareness. So i’m doing something on my own small space to remind you all that you gotta check those boobies!
Every year in the UK, 62,000 people fall victim to breast cancer. 1 in 8 of us will be affected. With a population of 65 million those numbers are pretty terrifying. A diagnosis of the big C not only changes your life, but also the lives of your family and friends.
691,000 people in the UK are currently fighting a breast cancer diagnosis.
So what can we do about it? The answer, is loads. Yes, this disease is the toughest of tough, it’s no easy defeat but that doesn’t mean that your contribution doesn’t matter – however small.
I’ve been keeping up with Lauren, from Girl Stole London lately. A wonderfully courageous, beautiful woman, really giving Cancer the twos up. Women like her will continue to amaze me. She is fighting, fighting hard. Her campaign GirlvsCancer can be read about it raw, revealing detail on her blog and you can support by purchasing some of the bad ass t-shirts she’s selling over there too. I can’t ever write the words to describe how in awe i am of women like Lauren. So here i am creating a photo and doing my thing so that maybe some of you will give yourself a bit of a grope tonight before you go to bed.
With numbers like the ones we face in the UK, it’s impossible for charities like Breast Cancer Care to reach everyone. However, with support from people like you and me and The Big Pink, they can be there for more of that 691k. They can provide more care, support and information. By supporting Breast Cancer Care, doing your bit, sparing a few quid. Maybe going for a 5k? Baking a cake? You can be confident that you’ll be helping people through one of the most difficult challenges they will ever face.
So pledge, don’t buy that flat white tomorrow morning and stick your two quid here. Raise awareness, remind those around you how important it is to check yourself out. Regularly. Breast Cancer doesn’t have to define you. Help me support Charities like Breast Cancer Care and i’ll leave you with some words from Lauren.
“Despite how difficult I’ll be forever grateful for this treatment, it has saved my life and it will save millions of others too. To all of my gorgey readers in the midst or about to embark on this hell of a ride – have hope and find faith. Get that head up and keep it there. Yes it’s terrifying but it’s temporary and your life will be all the richer for it. Fact.
I grieve my old life daily and mourn the girl I once was but this experience has been the making not the breaking. I’m proud of the woman cancer has made me and much like the Japanese art of Kintsukouri I will highlight my cracks because I am much more beautiful for having been broken. Mind. Body. Soul.” Lauren- Girl Stole London
